Coronavirus Becomes Global Pandemic: The recent outbreak of the Coronavirus or Covid-19 has caused widespread panic and alarm. With the constant onslaught of information, we are reminded by the World Health Organization, the Center for Disease Control, and local governments to continue preventative measures and enforce social distancing.

We are all vulnerable to this disease which is why we are in this together. Let’s do our part to not only remain safe but help those who have limited to no resources to do the same.

Helping Hand USA’s Response:

Updates from The Ground: As of June 18th, 2020, HHRD has provided services and materials to close to one million people. Our food and hygiene packages were distributed to 87,000 families in around 60 countries. In total over 73,134 families, that’s 511,000 people, have received essential food items.

COVID-19 awareness, educational material and hygiene sessions were provided to over 50,000 people, in Afghanistan, Kenya and other countries including two churches in Pakistan.

  • Hygiene and COVID-19 Awareness Session at Church in Pakistan
  • HHRD Sponsored Orphan Child in Afghanistan
  • HHRD PPEs provided to frontline medical workers in Pakistan
  • HHRD Mobile Clinic and Ambulance Ready to Serve in Pakistan
  • Masks Made by HHRD Skills Development Graduates in Chakwal, Pakistan

In Pakistan, 89, 875 pieces of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and medical assistance was provided through purchasing items locally and utilizing In Kind Gifts sent to the region at local hospitals and quarantine centers serving over 400,000 people. HHRD has dedicated one mobile health unit, and one ambulance to tackle COVID-19 efforts.

Items distributed include: PPEs, N-95 Masks, Surgical Face Masks, Gloves, Eye Protection Goggles, Basic Masks, Healthcare Staff Gowns, Patient Gowns, Soaps, Disinfecting Wipes, Hospital Bed Sheets, Disposable Garbage Bags, Medical Drapes, and Disinfectant Boxes.

Two HHRD medical clinics at the Rohingya Camps in Bangladesh required patients to maintain social distance and served over 4,000 patients with various sicknesses since the pandemic was announced on March 11, 2020.

Besides their regular studies, HHRD sponsored orphans participated in an Art competition in Jordan with 3,100 orphans, and Pakistan with 8,350 orphans.

Needs Assessments: Our international teams working with orphans, widows, refugees, the disabled, those living in poverty, and those residing in rural areas understand the impact this will have on this segment of society. Team members are visiting these groups to ensure their needs will be met through the provision of hygiene kits, hygiene workshops, and food packages.

Hygiene Kits: These kits are part of our Water and Sanitation Hygiene Program, which has been building water wells, water purification plants, bathrooms, and sanitation facilities in areas across the globe were the people simply cannot afford to build it themselves.

Food Packages:

Sweeping lockdowns have prevented daily-wage workers from being able to bring food to their families. Food ration packages for daily wage workers and low income families will help elevate their hardship during this difficult time. A nourishing meal can strengthen their resolve to continue to hold on to hope.

The World Health Organization is providing updates on how to prevent contamination and the infectious spreading of this virus.

Standard recommendations include:

• regular hand washing

• covering the mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing

• thoroughly cooking meat and eggs avoiding close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illnesses.

People are very anxious and stressed about their own safety, the safety of their loved ones and their families. But I want to remind you, that Allah SWT says that nothing will afflict us except what the law has already decreed for us. And this is a concept that we need to be aware of and remember all the time, that He SWT is our Protector.

Statement from HHRD USA’s CEO on Covid-19:

March 12, 2020

Assalam Alakum,

As you may know the recent outbreak of the Coronavirus or Covid-19 has caused widespread panic and alarm across the globe. The World Health Organization is providing updates on how to prevent contamination and the infectious spreading of this virus. Standard recommendations include regular hand washing, covering the mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing, and avoiding close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illnesses.

Helping Hand for Relief and Development is taking every precautionary measure to ensure our international and regional teams are complying by safety regulations to protect not only themselves but also our donors and beneficiaries.

The beauty of our Deen teaches us to have complete trust in Allah’s plan (Tawaakul) and reliance on Him alone. Allah (swt) says in Surah Al Baqarah:

“We shall certainly test you by afflicting you with fear, hunger, loss of properties and lives and fruits. Give glad tidings, then, to those who remain patient; those who when any affliction smites them, they say: “Verily, we belong to Allah, and it is to Him that we are destined to return. Upon them will be the blessings and mercy of their Lord, and it is they who are rightly guided” Al-Baqarah [2:155-157]

In a famous Hadith, by Ibn Abbas: One day, I was riding behind the Prophet (pbuh) when he said,

"O boy! I will teach you in some matters. Be watchful of Allah (Commandments of Allah), He will preserve you. Safeguard His Rights, He will be ever with you. If you beg, beg of Him Alone; and if you need assistance, supplicate to Allah Alone for help. And remember that if all the people gather to benefit you, they will not be able to benefit you except that which Allah had foreordained (for you); and if all of them gather to do harm to you, they will not be able to afflict you with anything other than that which Allah had pre-destined against you. The pens had been lifted and the ink had dried up". [The Book of Miscellany - At- Tirmidhi, Book 1, Hadith 62].

Nevertheless, we are to remain vigilant and should comply by all safety guidelines. Our Water for Life and Water Sanitation and Hygiene programs, offered in Africa, Afghanistan, Nepal, Jordan, and Pakistan help to not only provide access to clean drinking water but also, the distribution of soaps and hygiene kits to tackle waterborne diseases.

The health of our employees is our top priority and we want to ensure everyone feels safe. Once again, we will continue to monitor the situation closely for our staff and volunteers as more information is provided by the Center for Disease Control, the World Health Organization, and local government officials.

We ask that you continue to pray for the safety of those affected or struggling to remain healthy.

Jazakum Allah Khair,
Javaid Siddiqi
