World Hunger Day
No One Deserves to Starve To Death
An estimated 690 million people suffer from hunger worldwide. The United Nations cites conflict as the number one factor driving hunger. With countless conflicts across the globe, 9 million lives are claimed annually by this silent epidemic. The current pandemic can add an additional 130 million people to those suffering from hunger. Helping Hand for Relief and Development (HHRD) has been actively providing essential lifesaving humanitarian relief across the globe over the last 15 years. Beneficiaries include refugees, the disabled, orphans, widows, those living in unimaginable poverty and the elderly. HHRD’s programs and projects are geared toward providing both short and long term assistance to communities struggling with essentials such as food, water, shelter, health care and education.
Asia and East Africa top off the list of regions where most of the population is undernourished. Food insecurities, economics slowdowns and extreme weather are all major factors in increasing hunger at an alarming rate. Through its Seasonal programs, HHRD is providing food packages with essential nonperishable food items, relative to each region, that can produce nourishing meals for a family of 5 for up to 15 days. These food packages are distributed during the month of Ramadan, when most recipients fast, as well as during emergency relief conditions. Moreover, warm meals are distributed at the onset of needs assessments during natural disasters such as flooding, earthquakes, and such. Many families forgo the luxury of eating meat due to their inability to afford it. HHRD provides meat packages during the Eid ul Adha festivities to ensure families partake in the celebrations. In 2019, HHRD distributed 200,000 food packages in Ramadan in over 38 countries. Additionally, 30,660 Qurbani shares were distributed in over 60 countries.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, daily wage working families and those already suffering from poverty, deeply felt the consequence of government shutdowns. HHRD geared up for another distribution of over 3,300 hot meals and 87,000 food packages to families. Besides food packages, 639,296 people received hygiene kits along with food packages. HHRD’s ongoing emergency relief campaigns include food distribution to Pakistan flood victims, Beirut blast victims, Cyclone Amphan victims, refugee relief in Peru, Venezuela, and for Rohginya and Syrian Refugees. An estimated 144 million children suffer from impaired growth due their diets. HHRD’s Orphan Support Program is providing over 20,000 sponsored orphans a variety of services such as health screening and subsistence. Children are given a stipend for their education as well as, ensuring that they are receiving nourishing meals. No child deserves to sleep hungry; through HHRD’s programs, and donor support, they are provided a holistic upbringing.
World hunger threatens countless homes across the globe; families may not know where their next meal will come from. Organizations such as HHRD are encouraging the international community to come together and help feed those in need.
